Soundview Preparatory School, an independent, coed day school for grades 6 – 12, is located on a 13 acre campus in Yorktown Heights, New York in northern Westchester County. Founded in the spring of 1989, the School has an enrollment of approximately 75 students.
There are 24 full and part-time faculty, staff and administrators. Three quarters of the teaching faculty hold advanced degrees. Soundview’s purpose is to provide a college-preparatory education in a supportive and non-competitive environment that requires rigorous application to academics, instills respect for ethical values, and fosters self-confidence by helping each student feel recognized and valued.
Soundview Preparatory School admits students of any race, religion, and national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship and financial aid, and athletic or other school-administered programs.
Accreditation and Memberships: Soundview Preparatory School is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the New York State Association of Independent Schools, the College Board, and the Fairchester League.
Admission: Soundview operates under a rolling admission policy. Students are accepted throughout the year based on: an interview with the Director of Admissions, prior academic record, student visit, recommendations, a writing sample, and limited testing.
Students: Enrollment for grades 6 through 12 is approximately 75. Students come from Westchester, Putnam and Rockland Counties in New York State and from Fairfield County in Connecticut, as well as from New York City. Students of color comprise 15% of the student body. Approximately 30% of students receive need-based financial assistance.
Academic Program: The student/faculty ratio is 4:1 and the average class size is 7 students. Soundview Prep follows a semester program with quarterly report cards. Midterm exams are given at the conclusion of 2nd quarter, and final exams at the conclusion of 4th quarter. Soundview does not calculate GPA.
Graduation Requirements: Four years of English, History and Physical Education; three years of Math, Science and Foreign Language; two years of Art; and one year of Health. Community Service is also required for graduation.
Grading Policy: The grading scale is as follows:
Advanced Placement and Honors Courses: Students are placed in AP and Honors courses upon recommendation of the department chair and Head of School. Soundview offers AP Biology, AP AB Calculus, AP European History, AP Government, AP Physics and AP US History. Honors courses are offered in every subject based on the ability of the student body.
Athletics and Physical Education: All students are required to participate in Soundview's Physical Education program. Soundview offers the following sports: soccer, coed basketball, girls' basketball, and ultimate frisbee.
